Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

                                              Siblings at CHS

                                                   December 21,1993

                                                    Brother and Sister Act

...The CHS class of 1952 had just 88 members but in that one class there were four sets of
siblings. Brothers: Ralph and Elwood Tyre. Sisters: Katherine and Alfreda Sheely, and Betty and
Syvalon Tolleson. Brother/Sister: Howard and Mildred Register. Do you know of any CHS class,

regardless of size, that had more than four sets of siblings?

                                                     Making the Top Ten
...Vanessa Dean Arnold was a CHS business education teacher in the 1960s and 70s. In
1974, she earned her doctorate degree at UF and moved to the University of Mississippi where she

became as associate professor of management and marketing. According to a recent national
research study done by the Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, Dean is now listed among the top ten authors

              of articles on business communication.
                                                  The Wattenbarger Winner

...Former UF professor James L. Wattenbarger is widely recognized as the “father” of
Florida’s community college system. Now retired, he holds the title “Distinguished Service

Professor Emeritus,” and an annual scholarship is awarded in his name to the doctoral candidate
considered most likely to follow in Jim’s footsteps as a future leader in community college

education. This year’s distinguished winner is Susan Summers of Lake City. Susan is closely
identified with our own LCCC and has written a comprehensive history of LCCC as part of her

              doctoral program.
                                                     Welcome Neighbor!
...When our county school office moved into a new neighborhood on West Duval Street,

“preaching minister” Jerry Uppling of the nearby First Christian Church was one of the first to
extend a neighborly welcome. He wrote, “Welcome to our neighborhood that includes restaurants

and dry cleaners. In a way, our church is like the restaurants — we serve up a complete menu of
spiritual food. And we’re like the dry cleaners — we can help cleanse the spirit.” Jerry then went on

to offer to share any of the church’s equipment, services, staff, or building with the school
