Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

                                           What’s In A Name?

                                                   November 23, 1993

The Granny White Pike Band... Granny White was a Tennessee woman who offered food

and comfort to Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. To express their appreciation to her,
Nashville citizens named a road in her honor, “The Granny White Pike.” Some Lake City musicians
traveling to Nashville saw the name on a road sign. They liked the name so much — and the story

behind it - they took the name for their band. Thus, Earl Green, John Paul Kirby, Fred Miller and

Monty Savitz became known far and wide as “The Granny White Pike Band.”
Where are they now? ... Four large and lovely clocks - facing north, south, east, and west
              - used to sit atop our courthouse and gong the time each hour for all the town to hear. They were

apparently removed during one of the courthouse renovations. But where are they now? Also, an
old, possibly Civil War-era cannon used to sit on the east side of the courthouse facing Lake

DeSoto. Where is that cannon now? You tel! me and I will pass on the information to so many who
have asked me. And, who was the man who used to wind those four courthouse clocks? Call 755-

Three court clerks... In a 56-year period starting in 1913, Columbia County had just three

Circuit Court Clerks: J. L. Markham, Hugh B. Summers, and G. W. “Wash” Robarts. Markham won
the election in 1913 and served five consecutive four-year terms (20 years). Summers followed

Markham and also won five straight four-year terms (20 years). Then Robarts immediately followed
Summers and won four four-year terms (16 years). Total: 56 years.

Tim and Lee and 71. . .Tim Mixon played for our CHS Tigers in 1988, ‘89 and ‘90 and
wore jersey number 71. Then Tim’s younger brother Lee stepped in and played for the Tigers in

1991, ‘92 and ‘93. Lee also wore Tiger jersey number 71, so the brothers wore number 71 for six
consecutive years. I wonder if anything like that has ever happened before at CHS. Also, during

those six years, Tim and Lee’s parents, Betty and Ralph Mixon, supported their sons by attending
all the Quarterback Club meetings. For this support, Betty was honored by being named the first
woman to serve on the Quarterback Club’s Board of Directors.
