                                  The Atypical Transient Doctor

                                                     November 30,1993

“The Atypical Transient Doctor”. . .That is what Sam T. Ellis, a local Veterans’
Administration physician called himself in his autobiographical book back in 1977. Sam was a

“transient” because he liked to transfer from hospital to hospital around the country with the VA
system. He called himself “atypical” because he had done things not done by ‘"typical” doctors: he

played in a band, built his own home, was a championship little league baseball coach, golfed 36

killed in traffic accident while driving his daughter to college, he had already written his own
obituary: “This man was the father of 13 honest, talented, unselfish, well-mannered and well-liked

children - and an atypical transient doctor as long as he lived.”
Fuller’s Fulminations ... Fuller Warren was Florida’s governor from 1949-53 but 13 years

before that he was a columnist for - who else - the Lake City Reporter. His column was called
“Fuller’s Fulminations”. He had interesting opinions on every subject. On Florida politics: “Nobody
understands it. Just draw straws or go into a seance. Your guess is as good as mine.” On his first

venture into politics as a young man: “I ran a little less that last.” On his “strange” brother: “He has
