Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
A TOUCH OF CLASS. ... High atop the Community National Bank (on the Marion Street
side) you will see these words inscribed in stone: “First National Bank A.D. 1911.” So why does
one bank have another bank’s name on it? Because the building was originally built and occupied
by the First National Bank - which moved to 100 North First Street and is now NationsBank. But
when Community Bank took over the building and renovated it for own use, they left the inscription
there in respect to its historical origins. To Community National Bank — we thank you!
ALL SOUTHERN FOOTBALL PLAYERS... In 1932, CHS team captain Tiny Joe Long
became our very first, first-team All Southern football player - and Tiny was one of our greatest.
But the year before Tiny got his honor we had one who almost made it. Roy “Mub” Richards (CHS
team captain, 1931) was named Honorable Mention All Southern - and that was the first time in the
history of CHS that a Tiger player had received that honor. Roy was considered one of the best
tackles in Florida. He led CHS to an undefeated season — and only eight points were scored against
his team all season.
BITS AND PIECES. . . Congratulations to Pastor David Hadwin on the overwhelmingly
successful opening of the new Central Church of Christ on Highway 41 South - and to Al Grow and
others who worked every day for months without pay to make it all happen . . . Former Tiger
baseball player Ben Brack set the home run record at Huntington College, then turned pro and was
tearing up the league — but then he broke his hand on a pick off play, thus ending his season early.
But he’ll be back and he’s already looking forward to next year... Columbia, Bradford, Hamilton
and Putnam counties all have women superintendents — and that’s just in our area of the state ...
You all know about the beautiful renovation of our Administrative Complex. A similar renovation
is now nearing completion on the Central Building on the same campus. Known to many students
as Central Elementary, that building was built 1935-37 as a WPA project and will house our Adult
Education and other programs.
